The Davis Happy Troller Large Trolling Plate for inboards, inboard/outboards, and all outboard motors 50 hp and larger is a specialized speed-control device that solves one of trolling's most persistent challenges: achieving that precise, fish-enticing slow speed that larger engines simply cannot deliver at idle. Mounted on the anti-cavitation plate, this large trolling plate locks in the down position and allows fine-tuned control of forward speed, enabling anglers to present lures and live bait at exactly the right pace regardless of engine size.
At cruising speed, the Happy Troller also enhances overall boat stability by managing water flow dynamics around the hull. The large plate design accommodates high-horsepower engines where standard anti-cavitation plate depth alone creates excessive drag and forward momentum. By extending control surfaces, the device creates adjustable resistance that scales to bigger motors without requiring gear reduction systems or additional engine modifications. The locking mechanism keeps the plate secured during trolling, preventing shift or drift caused by wave action or prop wash variations.
This trolling plate is built for serious offshore and freshwater anglers, charter operators, and recreational fishermen who run larger center consoles, sport fishing boats, or commercial-class vessels. Whether targeting stripers, walleye, musky, or saltwater species like wahoo and snapper, the ability to maintain a 1- to 3-knot trolling speed separates consistent fish contact from wasted fuel and missed opportunities. Installation requires no permanent modifications—the plate attaches to existing anti-cavitation plate hardware on IO and outboard configurations rated 50 hp and up.
The Happy Troller represents a significant innovation in trolling technology by addressing the gap between idle throttle (typically 4–6 knots) and proper trolling speed (1–3 knots). Without this device, operators must use elaborate techniques like figure-eighting or shifting in and out of gear—methods that reduce precision and increase fuel consumption. Davis Instruments engineered this large-plate configuration specifically for high-horsepower applications where smaller trolling plates prove inadequate.
