Indian Head Gasket Shellac Compound by PERMATEX is a hard-setting, slow-drying sealant built for low-temperature, low-pressure gasket work. It's the same original formula mechanics have reached for on engine rebuilds, water pump gaskets, and cover plates for decades. Anyone coating felt, paper, rubber, or composition gaskets will get a dependable seal that holds the gasket in place during assembly and cures into a hard film. The dark brown liquid works across automotive and marine applications alike, which makes it a steady pick for shop work and field repairs. You'll find it alongside our other oils, fluids and sealers.
This is a shellac-based compound containing rosin, methanol, and methyl isobutyl ketone, mixing into a viscous dark brown liquid with a characteristic alcoholic odor. The 2 fl. oz. bottle covers a useful service range from -65°F to 350°F (-54°C to 177°C) per Permatex technical data, and the cured film resists water, steam, petroleum products, antifreeze, and diesel fuels. Because it sets hard rather than staying flexible, it suits coating and repairing common gasketing materials and light-duty threaded or hose connections rather than high-pressure dynamic joints. Store it between 46°F and 82°F (8°C to 28°C) to keep the formula stable. For flexible, non-hardening jobs, the No. 2 non-hardening sealant covers that side of the bench.
Reach for this when you're reinstalling a felt or paper gasket and want it to stay put while you torque everything down, or when sealing cover plates, thermostat housings, and water pump joints on older and newer engines alike. Marine work benefits too, given the chemical resistance to water, steam, and fuels. Brush a thin coat on both gasket faces, let it tack, and assemble. It pairs well with a flexible option like Form-A-Gasket for jobs that mix gasket types. See the full lineup of sealers and fluids to round out the shelf.
It coats, seals, and repairs most common gasketing materials, including felt, paper, rubber, and composition gaskets. It also handles metal gaskets, light-duty threaded connections, and hose connections. The dark brown shellac compound sets hard, making it suited to low temperature and low pressure applications in both automotive and marine work.
Per Permatex technical data, the cured compound serves from -65°F to 350°F (-54°C to 177°C). That covers most low-pressure gasket joints on engines and marine equipment. The film also resists water, steam, petroleum products, antifreeze, and diesel fuels once set.
It is a hard-setting, slow-drying liquid. Once cured, it forms a rigid film that locks the gasket in place. If you need a sealant that stays pliable for joints that flex or come apart later, a non-hardening formula is the better match for that job.
Make sure both surfaces are clean and dry. Brush a thin, even coat onto the gasket faces, allow it to tack up, then assemble and torque the joint. The slow-drying formula gives you working time to position the gasket before it sets.
This is the 2 fl. oz. bottle of the original quality Indian Head formula, an economical size for shop and field gasket repairs.
