Aluma-Hyde II in Magpul Flat Dark Earth is a 12 oz aerosol firearm finish built to match the tan tone shooters look for when refinishing rifles, optics, and polymer furniture. This is an air-cure epoxy-based coating, not a quick rattle-can paint, and it bonds to properly prepared aluminum, alloy, steel, plastics, synthetic stocks, fiberglass, and wood. The matte sheen keeps reflections down on working guns. If you've been hunting for a Magpul-matched coating that holds up to bore cleaners and field use, this is the finish that does the job without sending parts out for ceramic coating.
The chemistry is what sets this apart. Aluma-Hyde II uses a hard-curing epoxy base loaded with high-density pigment, which is where the durability and color depth come from. It dries to the touch in 10 to 15 minutes and reaches full cure in about 7 to 14 days, at which point it shrugs off most bore cleaners and solvents, including trichloroethylene. The exception is the most aggressive copper-removing solvents. No primer coat is required, and each can includes a Clean Out Nozzle to keep the tip from clogging between coats. For best results, spray between 70°F and 90°F, hold the can 12 to 15 inches from the surface, and lay down additional coats within 30 minutes. Once cured, it resists scratches, scuffs, and corrosion. Pair it with our solvents and degreasers to prep bare metal before spraying.
Refinishing an AR upper, restoring worn furniture, or blending an optic to match your rifle are all jobs this coating handles well. Degrease and prep every surface first, then apply thin, even coats and give it the full cure window before reassembly and cleaning. Because it stands up to solvents once cured, refinished parts go right back into your normal maintenance routine. Stock up on cleaning cloths for surface prep, and if you also work on wood stocks, look at our stock work finishes to round out the project.
Yes. This Aluma-Hyde II color is formulated to match the Magpul Flat Dark Earth tone, which is why shooters use it to blend optics, rails, and other parts to existing Magpul furniture for a consistent appearance across a build.
No primer coat is required. The epoxy base bonds directly to properly prepared surfaces. Degrease and clean the part thoroughly first, since adhesion depends on a clean, oil-free surface. Spray between 70°F and 90°F and hold the can 12 to 15 inches away.
It dries to the touch in about 10 to 15 minutes, but full cure takes roughly 7 to 14 days. Wait for full cure before heavy handling or cleaning. Once cured, the finish resists most bore cleaners and solvents, with the exception of the most aggressive copper-removing formulas.
It sticks to properly prepared aluminum, alloy, steel, plastics, synthetic stocks, fiberglass, and wood. That range makes it useful for refinishing metal receivers as well as polymer furniture and stock components on the same firearm.
After full cure, Aluma-Hyde II resists common bore cleaners and solvents, including trichloroethylene. The one caveat is the most aggressive copper-removing bore solvents, which can affect the coating, so limit prolonged contact with those during normal cleaning.
