10mm vs .45 ACP: Power, Recoil and Capacity

10mm Auto pushes a medium-weight bullet faster than typical .45 ACP, which shows up as higher published energy. .45 ACP fires a wider, heavier bullet at lower velocity, with a long track record in 1911s and modern double-stack pistols. Capacity, recoil and ammo cost usually favor .45 for range use and 10mm for those who want more velocity from a full-size pistol.

Figures are as published by Federal Premium on each product page (checked November 5, 2026). Federal lists handgun figures from a 4 or 5-inch test barrel. Velocity from your own barrel will differ.

Power and Penetration

10mm's higher velocity gives it more energy in Federal's published numbers and is often chosen for deeper penetration with hard-cast bullets. .45 ACP relies on a wide, heavy bullet at moderate speed.

Recoil and Control

Full-power 10mm is snappy in polymer pistols. Standard 230 gr .45 is a slower push that many 1911 shooters prefer. Milder 10mm practice loads exist; try before you stock up.

Capacity and Pistols

Modern full-size 10mm and .45 pistols can hold similar round counts. Classic single-stack 1911s in .45 hold fewer rounds than double-stack 9mm or 10mm guns.

Cost and Availability

.45 ACP is made in larger volume and is usually cheaper to practice with. 10mm costs more per round and the selection is narrower.

FAQ

Is 10mm more powerful than .45 ACP?

In Federal's published figures on this page, its 180 gr 10mm FMJ lists 424 ft-lb at the muzzle and its 200 gr 10mm HST lists 567 ft-lb, versus 404 ft-lb for its 230 gr .45 ACP loads. Results vary by load and barrel.

Is 10mm harder to shoot than .45?

Full-power 10mm usually has a sharper recoil impulse than standard .45 ACP in pistols of similar weight. Many shooters prefer milder 10mm loads for practice.

Can a Glock 20 shoot .45 ACP?

No. A Glock 20 is a 10mm pistol. Only fire the cartridge marked on the barrel.

Is 10mm good for woods carry?

Many hunters and guides choose 10mm for deeper penetration with hard-cast or heavy JHP loads. Shot placement and a reliable pistol still matter most.

Which is cheaper, 10mm or .45?

.45 ACP is usually cheaper and easier to find in bulk FMJ. Check our Ammo Price Index.

Are 10mm and .40 S&W the same?

No. .40 S&W is a shorter cartridge. Some 10mm pistols can be converted to .40 with the correct barrel and springs; never fire .40 in a 10mm chamber without that conversion.
