12 Gauge vs 20 Gauge: Recoil, Payload and Use
12 gauge is the most common shotgun bore in the US, with the widest ammo selection and the heaviest common payloads. 20 gauge is smaller, usually lighter to carry, and easier on the shoulder with standard field and target loads. Velocities for comparable clay loads are similar; the big difference is how much shot or slug weight each shell can throw.

Figures are as published by Federal Premium on each product page (checked November 5, 2026). Shotgun muzzle velocity is as listed on each load; patterns and felt recoil depend on choke, barrel and gun weight.
Payload vs Velocity
Clay loads in both gauges leave the muzzle around 1,200 fps in Federal's Top Gun line. The 12 gauge simply carries more shot weight in the common target loads compared here (1-1/8 oz vs 7/8 oz).
Recoil and Gun Weight
20 gauge guns are often lighter and softer to shoot with field loads. A heavy 12 gauge target gun can feel mild; a light 12 gauge magnum load will not.
Hunting and Slugs
For deer with slugs, Federal's published 12 gauge Power-Shok slug carries more energy than the 20 gauge slug on this page. Pattern and accuracy in your gun matter as much as the catalog number.
Home Defense
12 gauge buckshot is the most common defensive shotshell. 20 gauge buckshot exists but with fewer load choices. Train with the same load you keep for defense.

FAQ
Is 12 gauge more powerful than 20 gauge?
A 12 gauge can throw a heavier shot charge or slug. In Federal's Power-Shok rifled slug figures on this page, the 12 gauge 438 gr slug lists 2,521 ft-lb at the muzzle versus 1,864 ft-lb for the 20 gauge 328 gr slug.
Is 20 gauge enough for deer?
With a proper slug or buckshot load and a shot inside your effective range, many hunters use 20 gauge successfully. Follow your state's hunting rules.
Which has less recoil, 12 or 20?
20 gauge usually recoils less with common target and field loads, which is why many new shooters and youth hunters start there. Gun weight still matters.
Can I shoot 20 gauge shells in a 12 gauge?
No. Never fire the wrong gauge in a shotgun. It can obstruct the barrel and cause a catastrophic failure.
Are clay-target velocities similar?
Yes for common Top Gun loads on this page: Federal lists 1,200 fps for its 12 gauge 1-1/8 oz #7.5 and 1,210 fps for its 20 gauge 7/8 oz #8.
Which is cheaper to shoot?
12 gauge target loads are usually the cheapest and easiest to find. Check our Ammo Price Index.
