The Seastar PA1200-2 is an electronically controlled hydraulic power assist unit built to cut steering effort on boats running high-torque setups. It sits in the hydraulic circuit between the helm pump and the steering cylinder, adding pressure on demand to deliver automotive-style wheel feel on single, twin, or triple outboard rigs of 150 HP and up, as well as inboard applications. We stock it for owners who want lighter helm response without changing the number of lock-to-lock turns. If a power assist add-on isn't what your setup needs, our autopilot drives cover pump and ram options for steering automation.
Per manufacturer documentation, the PA1200-2 automatically recognizes 12V or 24V input, so there's no jumper or version to match at install. It's rated to 500 PSI working loads with 1000 PSI maximum peak system pressure and a 2000 PSI relief setting. Typical current draw runs around 3 amps with a 50-amp maximum, and the unit ships with a 15-foot wiring harness and mounting bracket. It pairs with SeaStar 1.7 and 2.0 standard helms on 1,000 PSI systems but is not intended for Pro helms. The unit mounts to a bulkhead or deck, not in a horizontal position, and carries ABYC, CE, NMMA, and ISO 10592 approval. If steering power is interrupted, the system reverts to manual operation.
This unit makes sense for center consoles, sportfish, and offshore boats where heavy hydraulic steering causes fatigue over a long day on the water. Because it works on demand and holds standby power when you're tracking straight, it draws very little current in normal running. It also plays well with marine autopilots and the SeaStar Power Purge bleeding system, which simplifies setup when you're integrating steering automation. For matching components, see our SeaStar fitting kit or browse the full range of outboard autopilot hardware to round out your steering build.
Yes. The unit automatically recognizes 12V or 24V input, so there's no version to match or jumper to set during installation. Typical current draw is around 3 amps with a 50-amp maximum.
It works with SeaStar 1.7 and 2.0 standard helms on 1,000 PSI hydraulic systems. It is not intended for Pro helms. The unit installs in the circuit between the helm pump and the steering cylinder.
No. If electrical power to the unit is interrupted, the system reverts to standard manual hydraulic steering. The number of lock-to-lock turns at the wheel also stays the same whether assist is active or not.
It mounts to a bulkhead or deck and should not be installed in a horizontal position. The unit ships with a mounting bracket and a 15-foot wiring harness for the install.
The PA1200-2 is designed for higher-torque applications, including outboards of 150 HP and up, twin and triple outboard rigs, and inboard setups where heavy hydraulic steering effort is a concern.
