Bullpup Rifles — Frequently Asked Questions

What is a bullpup rifle?

A bullpup rifle places the action and magazine behind the trigger group, allowing a full-length barrel in a package significantly shorter than a conventional rifle with the same barrel length. This makes bullpups highly maneuverable without giving up barrel length.

What bullpup rifles are available for civilians?

The IWI X95 (5.56 NATO) and Tavor 7 (7.62 NATO) are Israeli designs, and the Steyr AUG A3 M2 is the iconic Austrian bullpup. The Kel-Tec RDB uses a downward-ejecting design, the Desert Tech WLVRN comes in 223, 308 and 300, and the Desert Tech HTI is a .50 BMG bullpup.

Is there a 5.56 or .223 bullpup?

Yes. 5.56 NATO bullpups on this page include the IWI X95, Steyr AUG A3 M2, Kel-Tec RDB and Desert Tech WLVRN 223, all of which also accept .223 Remington.

Do you sell 9mm and .22 bullpups?

Yes. For 9mm there is an IWI 9mm 17" bullpup and the KRISS Vector CRB G3 9mm. For .22, the Desert Tech Trek-22 is a suppressor-ready rimfire bullpup.

Are bullpup rifles harder to operate than conventional rifles?

Bullpup triggers have historically been a criticism, because the long linkage from the trigger to the action behind it can produce a heavier, less crisp pull. Modern designs from IWI and Steyr have largely addressed this. Ejection patterns also differ, which matters for left-handed shooters. The Kel-Tec RDB ejects downward, and the IWI X95 is offered in left-hand models.
