The Wheeler Engineering Scope Ring Alignment and Lapping Kit is built for shooters and gunsmiths mounting optics with 1 inch tubes who want their rings true before the scope ever goes in. Misaligned rings put bending stress on the scope tube, mar the finish, and rob you of consistent zero. This kit diagnoses both vertical and horizontal misalignment, then corrects it. If you mount your own glass or work on rifles in the shop, it pays for itself the first time it saves a scope. Pair it with the rest of your optics and mounting gear for a complete setup.
The kit ships with two 1 inch alignment bars, a 1 inch lapping bar with a dedicated handle, and a 1 oz jar of 220 grit silicon carbide lapping compound. The alignment bars seat in the installed rings so their pointed tips meet, showing you exactly where the rings sit off-axis before you commit a scope to them. The lapping bar, coated with the silicon carbide compound, then cuts the high spots inside the ring halves. The result is more even surface contact across both rings, which spreads clamping force and improves grip under recoil. The bars and lapping bar are steel with a blued finish, made in the USA per Wheeler Engineering specifications, and the kit includes complete instructions.
Reach for this kit any time you install a new scope on a bolt gun, AR, or rimfire, especially when running rings from two different bases or a one-piece mount with questionable machining. Lapping until you see roughly even contact around the ring interior tells you the rings are gripping the tube and not crushing it at two points. It is a one-time job per ring set that protects every scope you mount afterward. Keep it on the bench alongside your cleaning supplies and other rifle parts and tools so it is ready the next time a build comes together.
It is sized for 1 inch scope rings and 1 inch scope tubes. The two alignment bars and the lapping bar are all 1 inch in diameter, so it works with any 1 inch rings regardless of base or mount style. It is not intended for 30mm or 34mm rings.
Lapping cuts the high spots inside the ring halves so they make even contact around the scope tube. That spreads clamping force, reduces bending stress on the scope, improves grip under recoil, and minimizes marring of the tube finish. It also reveals alignment problems before they damage a scope.

You install one bar in each ring and bring the pointed tips together. If the points meet cleanly, the rings are aligned. If they sit off to one side or at different heights, you have horizontal or vertical misalignment to correct before mounting your scope.
