9mm vs 10mm: Capacity, Recoil and Power
9mm Luger is the high-capacity, low-cost handgun standard. 10mm Auto is a longer, more powerful cartridge that trades capacity and soft recoil for higher published energy. For most defensive and range shooters, 9mm is easier to shoot well; 10mm is for shooters who want more power and will practice with it.

Capacity
Because 9mm is smaller, pistols of the same size usually hold more 9mm rounds than 10mm. That is a major reason 9mm dominates duty and carry guns.
Recoil and Shootability
9mm is easier for most people to shoot quickly and accurately. Full-power 10mm needs a firm grip and more practice.
Self-Defense
Quality hollow points in both calibers are designed to expand. Shot placement and reliability beat caliber arguments.
Cost
9mm is the cheapest common centerfire handgun round to practice with. 10mm practice ammo costs more and is stocked in fewer SKUs.

FAQ
Is 10mm just a hotter 9mm?
No. 10mm uses a larger-diameter bullet and a longer case. Only fire the cartridge marked on your barrel.
Which has more energy, 9mm or 10mm?
In Federal's figures on this page, 10mm lists higher muzzle energy (424–567 ft-lb) than the 124 gr 9mm loads (364 ft-lb). Barrel length and load still matter.
Is 10mm too much for self-defense?
Many people carry 9mm because it is easier to shoot quickly and accurately. 10mm works with quality hollow points if you can control it; practice matters more than the caliber name.
Can I shoot 9mm in a 10mm pistol?
Not without a manufacturer-approved caliber conversion. Never fire 9mm in a 10mm chamber.
Which is cheaper to shoot?
9mm is usually much cheaper per round. Check our Ammo Price Index.
Does 10mm have more recoil than 9mm?
Yes, in full-power loads. That is why most duty and carry pistols are chambered in 9mm.
