The Wheeler Lapping Compound Kit is a three-grit set built for bore lapping rifle and handgun barrels. It ships with three 1 oz jars of silicon carbide abrasive paste in 220, 320, and 600 grit, covering the full progression from cutting to smoothing to polishing. Shooters and gunsmiths reach for this kit when they want to remove tool marks and surface imperfections left from button rifling or broaching, the same imperfections that grab copper and hurt accuracy. It works with the Wheeler Lapping Kit or independently with bore brushes, which makes it a flexible addition to any gunsmithing tools bench.
The kit follows a progressive grit system. The 220 grit does the heavy cutting and knocks down the worst of the tool marks. The 320 grit smooths the surface left behind, and the 600 grit polishes the bore to a finish that releases jacketed and lead bullets with less friction. All three compounds use an oil-based formula to reduce heat and friction as the lap or brush passes through the barrel. Each grit is packaged in its own 1 oz jar, so there is no cross-contamination between cutting and polishing stages. Beyond bores, the same compounds work for lapping bolt faces and bolt lugs, which is why it lives in a lot of precision build kits alongside other action rifle parts.
Bore lapping pays off most on a new barrel before the first serious load workup, or on a barrel that fouls heavily and is hard to clean. Running the 220, 320, and 600 grits in order leaves a smoother surface that holds copper less aggressively and tends to settle in faster. Handgun shooters use the finer grits to clean up rough chambers and bores as well. If you are setting up a build or refreshing an older barrel, pair this kit with the right brushes and patches from our parts and accessories selection and work slowly through each stage.
The kit includes three 1 oz jars in 220, 320, and 600 grit. The 220 grit cuts, the 320 grit smooths, and the 600 grit polishes. Running them in that order works through tool marks and finishes the bore to a smoother surface.
Yes. The compound works on rifle and handgun bores. It can be used with the Wheeler Lapping Kit or on its own with bore brushes, and the same grits also work for lapping bolt faces and bolt lugs.
Smoothing the bore with progressive grits removes the surface imperfections that grab jacket material. A smoother bore tends to foul less and clean more easily, which is one of the main reasons shooters lap a new or rough barrel.
Yes. The oil-based silicon carbide formula can be used with both lead and jacketed bullets and is designed to reduce friction and heat as the lap passes through the bore.
