6.5 Creedmoor vs .308: Which Rifle Cartridge Wins?

6.5 Creedmoor is a short-action cartridge built around efficient, high-ballistic-coefficient bullets. .308 Winchester is the older, more common short-action hunting and match round with a wider bullet menu and usually cheaper practice ammo. Both fit many of the same rifle actions; the better choice is the one that matches your distance, game and practice budget.

Figures are as published by Federal Premium on each product page (checked November 5, 2026). Rifle velocity is typically from a 24-inch test barrel unless the product page says otherwise. Velocity from your own barrel will differ.

Trajectory and Wind

6.5 Creedmoor was designed so common 120–140 grain bullets hold velocity farther downrange. In Federal's tables above, the 120 gr Creedmoor is still at 2,270 fps at 300 yd versus 2,183 fps for the 150 gr .308 FMJ. That does not make every Creedmoor load flatter than every .308 load.

Recoil and Practice

Lighter recoil helps most shooters stay on target for follow-up shots and longer range sessions. .308 still wins for cheap volume practice because FMJ is made in huge volume.

Hunting

Both take deer-size game with the right bullet. Soft points and bonded designs matter more than the case headstamp. Match bullet weight and construction to the animal and your state's rules.

Rifle Fit

Both are short-action cartridges. Many bolt guns and some AR-10/SR-25-pattern rifles are offered in either chambering. Only fire the cartridge marked on your barrel.

FAQ

Is 6.5 Creedmoor flatter than .308?

In Federal's published figures for the loads on this page, the 6.5 Creedmoor 120 gr OTM retains more velocity at 300 and 500 yards than the .308 150 gr FMJ. Trajectory still depends on the exact load and zero.

Can I convert a .308 rifle to 6.5 Creedmoor?

Some platforms allow a barrel or barrel-and-bolt change. Only use a conversion approved by the firearm maker, and only fire the cartridge marked on the barrel.

Which has less recoil, 6.5 Creedmoor or .308?

Most shooters feel less recoil from typical 6.5 Creedmoor hunting and match loads than from similar-weight .308 loads in rifles of the same weight. Try both if you can.

Is 6.5 Creedmoor good for hunting?

Yes. Soft-point and bonded hunting loads like Federal Fusion are made for deer-size game. Match the bullet to the game and your state's rules.

Which is cheaper to shoot?

.308 Winchester usually has more budget FMJ options. Check current prices in our Ammo Price Index.

Do I need a different magazine for 6.5 Creedmoor?

Many short-action rifles use magazines sized for .308-length cartridges; 6.5 Creedmoor is designed around that length. Follow your rifle and magazine maker.
